Walmart Halts Kindle Sales as Frustration With Amazon Mounts

In a sign of brick-and-mortar retailers’ mounting frustration with Amazon, Walmart informed store managers Wednesday that it no longer plans to carry Amazon’s Kindle e-readers or tablets in stores.

In an internal memo obtained by Reuters, Walmart wrote, “We have recently made the business decision to not carry Amazon tablets and e-readers beyond our existing inventory and purchase commitments…Includ[ing] all Amazon Kindle models current and recently announced.”

Walmart did not air any frustrations about Amazon; the company merely said the decision was consistent with its overall merchandising strategy, according to Reuters. The company could not be reached for comment by press time.

When Target announced in May it would no longer carry Kindles, it was much more explicit about its reasons. In a letter sent to vendors in January and cited by Citi analyst Deborah Weinswig in a note to clients, the company wrote, “What we aren’t willing to do is let online-only retailers use our brick-and-mortar stores as a showroom for their products and undercut our prices.”

Target was referring to a practice whereby consumers visit stores to check out products and then buy them online at Amazon instead. Amazon promoted this behavior with a promotion around its Price Check app last holiday season, which offered a 5% discount (up to $15) to shoppers who scanned a product in-store and then purchased it on Amazon.

UPDATE: A Walmart spokesperson sent the following statement to Mashable:

“Recently, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. made a business decision to not carry current Amazon products beyond our purchase commitments and existing inventory.

Our customers trust us to provide a broad assortment of products at everyday low prices, and we approach every merchandising decision through this lens.

We will continue to offer our customers a broad assortment of tablets, eReaders and accessories at a variety of great price points. This decision is consistent with our overall merchandising strategy.”

Judge: Actress in Anti-Muslim Film Can’t Force YouTube to Take it Down

Cindy Lee Garcia, an actress who appeared in the controversial anti-Islam YouTube clip that’s fueling protests worldwide, is suing the film’s creator for fraud and slander. As part of that lawsuit, Garcia wanted the court to force YouTube to remove the video — something the company has refused to do.

The judge’s response? Not going to happen.

Judge Luis Lavin rejected Garcia’s takedown request, according to the Associated Press. His decision partially hinged on the fact that Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, the man now considered responsible for the film, hasn’t yet been served with a copy of the lawsuit.

Garcia has previously claimed Nakoula heavily edited the film, dramatically changing its intent. In the lawsuit against him, she’s claiming emotional distress and professional damage as a result of the final product.

“Emotionally, I am very disturbed,” Garcia told the Associated Press. “My whole life has been turned upside down in every aspect. My family has been threatened.”

According to the lawsuit, Garcia is claiming that keeping the video online violates her right to privacy and makes her appear bigoted towards Muslims.

“This lawsuit is not an attack on the First Amendment nor on the right of Americans to say what they think, but does request that the offending content be removed from the Internet,” reads the lawsuit.

YouTube has refused to delete the video completely, but it has been blocked in several countries, including Egypt and Libya — raising some concerns among digital free speech groups.

YouTube has not yet responded to Mashable’s request for a comment.

Should the actress be allowed to request a takedown?

Soccer Player Nearly Blown Up by Grenade Thrown on Field [VIDEO]

Sometimes, soccer fans throw trash and other debris onto the pitch. Usually those things are not grenades. But an Iranian soccer player was nearly blown up after after tossing away a grenade he thought was a piece of trash on the field of play, according this video uploaded to YouTube on Thursday. As the video shows, things would have ended very, very badly had the device detonated just a fraction of a second earlier. The match was called off and police are reportedly investigating.
